Referee: “Yes I threw the Barca-PSG game, I had a tenner on Barcelona to qualify”
Deniz Aytekin admitted in a recent interview after the unbelievable comeback by Barcelona against PSG on Wednesday that he had deliberately sought to let Barcelona qualify for the Champions League quarter finals.
He’s quoted saying, “It was quite a balancing act to look like I wasn’t favouring Barcelona, booking Suarez for a dive before giving him a penalty was a moment of genius if I say so myself. I’ve come out of it just looking like a bit of a shit referee rather than a biased one.”
“Who’s going to notice another shit referee in European football these days? They’re ten-a-penny.”
He also railed against the suggestion that his actions were scandalous saying, “I won 100 euros on that match and took my wife out for a lovely meal in the city centre afterwards. I think any sane person would have done the same. Besides, everyone hates PSG.”
It remains to be seen whether Aytekin will be awarded another match as high profile as this one but one UEFA spokesperson said, “It’s always useful to have a referee as morally bankrupt as him to wheel out whenever Barcelona are losing after a first leg knockout tie.”
“He pulled off the job much more subtly than Ovrebo managed in 2009, so we thank him for that.”
